THE END IS AT HAND: An Illustrated History of the Apocalypse is a collection of short essays and linocut illustrations about the end of the world. The book explores how it has all ended before, when we mistakenly thought it would end again, and the ways it could end in the future. Told chronologically, the tales begin with prehistoric extinctions and extend into the distant future when the universe may or may not collapse. Nothing lasts forever, including the worlds we inhabit - human society, our planet, and the entire universe.

We’ve been concerned with the End since the Beginning. From Viking warrior mythology to the folktales that became Chicken Little, our undying obsession with the apocalypse has shaped world history and provided enlightening lessons. Protection from impending doom may come in the form of joining a cult, drinking a magic elixir, or visiting a prophet hen. From tragedy comes inspiration, like when a global disaster led to the invention of the bicycle. Our escapist horror stories of locusts, zombies, and aliens are rooted in reality. Modern threats like global warming and artificial intelligence are valid, but we may be forgetting the classics like volcanos and asteroids.

How do you think the world will end?
